Why do we write?
As writers we wish to create a way of looking at the world that communicates something new, something different, something thought provoking.
We want the reader/ listener to feel satisfied and entertained and that they can take something away with them, that they did not have before.
Who are we? How did we start on our writing journey together?
The founding members of the group all attended a short weekly creative writing course held by Fleet Arts in early summer 2025. We all had an interest in exploring our writing but for most of us this was a big first step. It was an inspiring four weeks and a perfect start to developing our writing. When the course ended many of us expressed how we would appreciate continuing to meet with each other and develop our writing. So within two weeks the Belper Scribes had their first meeting and we continue to meet every Friday at the library.
Jo wanted to write at 18 and became a teacher instead. But that was not where her story ended… 29 years later, she picked up her pen to start writing her Mum’s eulogy and never stopped from that point on. She has ambitions to become a published author but for now… the highlight of her week is Friday writing group.
Meet Larry Markham. Larry has had ideas for stories sloshing around in his head for as long as he can remember. He started writing his ideas down about 20 years ago but didn’t start fleshing them out properly until he met The Belper Scribes. He dreams of being a published author and is working on a novel but also loves writing short stories and poetry.
Amy always enjoyed writing stories whilst at school, with a particular interest in fan fiction. At 28 became a mature student, studying English Literature and Language, which reignited my love for writing. Later went on to do a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing. She has always particularly enjoyed writing short stories, however has become more passionate about writing poetry, and also have dreams about eventually penning a novel.
Emerald, while travelling on that highway we call ‘life’ had her own particular blend of experiences, thoughts, dreams and reflections. Some she thought she would like to share. So she decided to sign up for a local creative writing course which was inspirational. This was the beginning of a personal writing journey for Emerald and she is looking forward to finding out where it may lead.
